Clark Lake winked and Beth June captured it–the winter solstice sunset. The sun set as far to south as it ever does. And it also marks the shortest day of the year. From now on the days will gradually lengthen.
Although it didn’t seem like it last February, Clark Lake is a long way from the Arctic Circle. If you think our day is short, north of the Arctic Circle there is no direct sunlight at all during the winter solstice. At the south pole, the sun never sets during the winter solstice and is aptly called the “midnight sun.”
It is surly a strange early winter 2015. Probably happened many times in the past, we just weren’t here. Great picture.
