A Hanover man went to jail because of his part in an injury accident on the outskirts of Brooklyn (M-50 and Brooklyn Road) late on March 29th.

Columbia Township Police report a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse occupied by two adults and two children was stopped for the signed intersection on north bound Brooklyn Rd waiting to proceed on to M-50 when a southbound 2018 Mercedes Benz occupied by the 36-year old Hanover man struck the Chevrolet head-on as it was setting still waiting for traffic to clear.

The driver of the Mercedes Benz was identified as 36-year old William J. Stewart (of Hanover).  Further Police say he was operating the Mercedes Benz while intoxicated. Stewart, who was injured as result of the crash was transported to the Henry Ford Hospital, by Jackson Community Ambulance for treatment and released. Upon Stewart’s release from the hospital, he was then arrested by the investigating officer and transported to the Jackson County jail where he was lodged for operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.

The occupants of the Chevrolet Traverse were also transported from the scene of the crash to Henry Ford Hospital, where one of the adults was admitted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries for further treatment. The remaining adult and two children were treated and released.

A police report was forwarded on March 30th, 2023, to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney for review.  William J. Stewart of Hanover was charged with the following crimes:

  • Operating with a high blood alcohol content causing serios injury with a prior conviction. A felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
  • Operating while intoxicated-third offense. A felony, punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
  • On March 30th, 2023, William J. Stewart was arraigned by the 12th District Court. Stewart has since been
    released from jail on a $7500 dollar recognizance bond. Stewart is due back in court on April 30th, 2023, for a
    preliminary exam.
