A complaint about a missing generator in Brooklyn led to a drug arrest.  Police opened an investigation consisting of interviews, technology and other techniques.  According to Columbia Township Police Chief Jay Niles, “a search warrant was completed and sought for a residence in the 100 block of Sherman Street in the village of Brooklyn. The search warrant was authorized by the 12th District Court on September 10th, 2023, and completed later that same day.  As a result, various pieces of evidence were collected and seized that contributed to this investigation.  Also located during the search warrant was some controlled substance, specifically identified as methamphetamine.  A police report was completed regarding the controlled substance and forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.  On October 4th, 2023, the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney authorized a criminal charge for 45-year-old Steven E. Schultz of Brooklyn charging him with the following: Controlled substance-Possession of methamphetamine, a felony punishable of up to 10 years and/or $15,000.00.”

“On October 7th, 2023, Schultz was located at his residence in Brooklyn and arrested on this charge.  Schultz was lodged at the Jackson County Jail and arraigned on October 9th, 2023, before the 12th District Court.  Schulz has been released from jail and is currently out on bond.  The larceny investigation regarding the generator is still open pending laboratory reports.

“On October 8th, 2023, the Columbia Charter Township Police Department located an additional person at the same location as the felony arrest from the day prior (Schulz). The individual,  identified as 38-year-old Jeremy D. Smith of Norvell Township, had outstanding warrants for his arrest.  Smith was taken into custody and while doing so a quantity of controlled substance was located. The controlled substance was identified as methamphetamine. Smith was transported to the Jackson County Jail and lodged for his warrants as well as the possession of the controlled substance. On October 9th, 2023, the police report was forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for review. On October 10th, 2023, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the criminal charge of: Controlled substance-Possession of methamphetamine, a felony punishable of up to 10 years and/or $15,000.00.

“On October 11th, 2023, Smith was arraigned by the 12th District Court. Smith is still being held at the Jackson County Jail pending future court dates.”
