Clark Lake has lost one of its own.  Joyce Shawaker passed away in Toledo on May 6th.

The Shawaker cottage on Eagle Point was truly a loved gathering spot for the family through the years.  Joyce’s connection with the lake began in 1956.  She married her husband, Stephen, in 1959.

Joyce always recalled fond memories of the years at Clark Lake with Steve and their three sons, Scott, Pete and Andy.

What made those days all the richer were friends and other family members who frequently joined them.  She enjoyed sharing time at the lake with her sons’ families (daughters-in-law Rhonda,  Elizabeth and Samantha, and nine grand children.  They are Caitlin, Connor, PJ, Lauren, Tom, Sarah, Mary, Emily and John (in birth order).  Summers were the best, but the family visited the Clark Lake cottage in all seasons.

Joyce, and husband Steve, were strong supporters of Clark Lake and all it stands for.  When the overflow at the east end was threatened, they participated in DamStrong, the project to fortify it.  More recently, when the Community Center was in need of restoration, Joyce took an interest and stepped up.  The Community Center was at one time the Graziani cottage.  Before it was moved to the County Park, it stood on Kentucky Point, directly across the lake from the Shawaker’s.  It was always in view of the Shawaker’s from their vantage point high on the Eagle Point hill.

Like many at Clark Lake, Toledo was also home.  Joyce’s accomplishments there were many, including her years as an educator.  She had many interests.  To read a more detailed account of her life, please click here.
