Each year, Columbia Township Police officers step up to help needy kids at Christmas.  The officers make sure the kids have something under the tree.  As you can see in these photos, the kids actually “Shop with a Cop.”

In the past, officers bought gifts out of their own pocket.  Now, a fundraiser held at the Clark Lake Community Center welcomes contributions to the program so the entire financial  burden would not fall on the officer’s shoulders.  Such is what happened today.  Below are Police Chief David Elwell, the Community Center’s John Karkheck and Sergeant Jay Niles.

Two-thirds of the donations today will go to Shop with a Cop, and the remainder will support Andy’s Angels.  As noted in their website, “Andy’s Angels is a non-profit foundation formed in an effort to educate the community on opiate abuse and provide support for families and those suffering addiction…  Andy’s Angels honors Andy Hirst who passed away May 17, 2010 from a heroin overdose.”
