Columbia Township Police arrested a 21 year old man at the Wesco gas station in Brooklyn on March 10th.  Their investigation revealed he had a concealed semi-automatic handgun.  Here is the story in the words of the police:

On March 10th, 2023, at 1:31am, Officers from the Columbia Township Police Department were dispatched to the Wesco gas station located at 10409 N. Main St in the village of Brooklyn for a welfare check on a nonresponsive individual located within a running vehicle. The officers responded and contacted the driver and quickly determined that the subject was responsive and intoxicated. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the suspect had on his person a concealed loaded semi-automatic handgun. Further investigation revealed that the subject did not possess the correct credentials that allowed him to carry the firearm concealed on his person.

The subject, identified as 21-year-old Nathan R. Whiting of Dexter, was detained and ultimately arrested for possessing a concealed weapon. Whiting was transported and lodged at the Jackson County Jail on this charge.  The police report was forwarded to the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney’s office on March 10th, 2023, for review of criminal charges. Later that same day Whiting was charged with the following charges:

Count 1:
Weapons – Carrying Concealed, a felony punishable up to 5 years in prison and mandatory forfeiture of the
weapon.

Count 2:
Operating While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor punishable up to 93 days in jail.

Count 3:
Weapons- Firearms- Possession under the influence, a misdemeanor punishable up to 93 days in jail.
Whiting was brought before the 12th District Court of Jackson County for arraignment before Judge Michael Klaeren.

Currently Whiting is free on $2500 cash/surety bond pending the next court date.
