Crews are seal coating two sections of the Clark Lake Spirit Trail today (Wed 9/11) – the section through the County Park and the former railroad bed that runs parallel to Hyde Road at the west end.
Once the new coating has been applied, the crew will erect a temporary barrier. As long as the barrier is in place (about 24 hours), no traffic should pass over it.
These two sections of the Trail were repaved last year. To keep that major investment looking and performing as it should, seal coating protects it from what weather can do to it. Tiny crevices appear and moisture freezing and thawing cause distortions or worse.
Maintenance of the Spirit Trail occurs because unpaid volunteers roll up their sleeves and take care it. For activities like today’s seal coating and last year’s paving, third parties are employed. Last year’s paving cost exceeded $50,000, and the project today is estimated at $4,000. Concrete was not an option because of the extreme cost. It is because of the generosity of Clark Lakers that the Spirit Trail remains the popular amenity that attracts so much use – walkers, runners, cyclists. Interested in making a donation?
