Traffic was blocked on Jefferson Road near the intersection of Q Lane and Hayes Road about 1 pm today as police dealt with the aftermath of automobile accident. Columbia Township Police report the driver, 19-year old Kristen Stone of Jackson, was “briefly distracted resulting in the vehicle leaving the road and striking a tree.” Acting Police Chief Jay Niles adds “the vehicle then burst into flames.” He notes as “first responders arrived the car was fully involved with fire. Fortunately, the occupants of the crashed vehicle were able to escape.”

Police say the passenger, 18-year old Makena Matthews of Brooklyn, suffered non-threatening injuries and was “treated at the scene and then transported to Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital.”

The driver was cited for careless driving. The Jackson County Sheriff Department assisted with traffic control. The approximate address was 5500 Jefferson Road.

IT doesn’t say how fast she was going. It’s time to make Jefferson rd 45 mph from Reed rd to ocean beach rd!
Best regards,

Hmmm, distracted driving. 18 years old??? Probably texting. Speed limit had nothing to do with that. Thankfully, she wasn’t going any faster than she was. Glad everyone made it out safely.
Speed was not a said factor distracted driver was phone texting maybe ..just glad everyone is ok
Speed may well have not been a factor, but dropping the limit as suggested would be a help. I live next door to the location of the accident, (the former Shovels residence, for you longterm Clarklakers), and people are constantly speeding around that same curve. Regardless of traffic ahead of them, deer crossing the road, the postal carriers, slower farm machinery, and the many Spirit Trail users along the road.
Unfortunately, sooner or later a ‘distracted’ driver, or an intentionally racing driver, is likely to cause another accident at this same area
I am glad the fire didn’t catch my neighbor and mines woods afire; and even more glad everyone was alright in the end. But I sure don’t want a worse accident to occur.
